When you think of public drinking fountains, your mind likely conjures up images of institutional, boring spouts that dispense gallons of tap water. But leave it to Europe to totally one-up us with the latest addition to their list of boozy spouts: A wine fountain. Mashable reports that a vineyard in central Italy has installed the tourist destination of our dreams: a fountain that dispenses free red wine 24 hours a day. The wine fountain is located in the town of Ortona, which is south of Rome and known for its Montepulciano grapes. The fountain is the work of the Dora Sarchese Vineyard and a local non-profit that works to promote and preserve the Cammino di San Tommaso pilgrimage trail, which passes through Ortona.
The wine fountain, called the Fontana del Vino in Italian, poured its first glasses this past weekend. It’s housed in a barrel-like structure that’s appropriately sized for the amount of wine it’ll be dispensing. The fountain is free of charge, though you’ll have to be a pilgrim to take advantage of it. The Local explains that the fountain is located along the Cammino di San Tommaso, and each year thousands of people travel to Ortona on this route to honor St. Thomas, Jesus’ disciple whose relics are said to be kept there.
The non-profit teamed up with the winery to build the fountain in memory of those who walk the pilgrimage, and to help attract more tourists. It’s the first of its kind, and it’s expected to attract more people to the area and encourage them to stay longer, which should help boost tourism for the small town.
And while it’s not the only wine fountain in the world—there are a few others in places like London and Amsterdam—it is the first to dispense wine 24/7. Hopefully the other ones will follow suit soon, so we can have them all over the world.
